No, Ana there is no Santa Claus!

I was driving Ana to school yesterday and as usual we talk about different things during the 25 minute ride.  As Christmas is approaching, she asked a very interesting question.  She wanted to go and sit on Santa's lap and tell him what she wants for Christmas.  Please keep in mind she is 11 years old, way past the Santa age.  I thought at first she was just joking, but no, the more the conversation progressed I realized she really did believe that Santa was real and that the reindeers were too and the whole North Pole and Elves!  Oh, my.  Well, I told her the truth. I said, Santa is a strange man with a red suit and fake white beard.  Then I asked, "Do you want to sit on a strange man's lap"?  Her eyes became really wide and quickly remarked --NO, NO, NO! Good,  now I have to tackle the gift-giving with her.  The gifts are not important, but I believe that for so long all she had was people giving her things that to her presents are VERY important.  People, mostly Americans, send boxes and boxes of gifts for Christmas.  So I think she is expecting a lot of presents.  We'll see how she reacts when she only gets a couple of things.

What were the Christmas traditions in Ukraine?

I didn't think Santa was such a big thing there as here. I thought they believed in St Nicholas, and he is real.

Also it's Jesus's birthday (and the Winter Solstice).

Adoption Adventure said...

I just caught up on our post today after not having read any for months. You could be describing my daughter who we adopted when she was 11. It was constant redirection on everything all the time. She has been home over two years and there has been amazing changes. Look at how far you have brought her think about two years down the road. We still correct a few of the old behaviors sometimes but over all it is so much better. Rhonda
